Pepe Aguilar on Carrying the Aguilar Legacy, Owning His Music, and His Latest Album ‘Que Llueva Tequila’: ‘This Is Business, Not Just Family’

Mexican singer and actor Antonio Aguilar was already making waves in Hollywood when he married singer and actress Flor Silvestre in 1960, forming one of the most influential entertainment dynasties in Southern California. Antonio, known for his roles in Western films such as The Undefeated alongside John Wayne, and Flor, a star of Mexico’s Golden Age of cinema, built a career that combined music and equestrian sports in a groundbreaking live performance known as la charrería or jaripeo. Their children grew up on the road, watching their parents perform in front of international audiences.

Now, more than six decades later, their son, Pepe Aguilar, is leading the next generation of the Aguilar dynasty. A four-time Grammy winner with over 13 million records sold, Pepe is at the helm of a new wave of performers within his family. His children, 24-year-old Leonardo and 20-year-old Angela, along with his brother Antonio Jr., are currently on the U.S. leg of their jaripeo tour, an updated version of the family’s signature show. This modern iteration incorporates theatrical elements, circus-style stunts, artificial intelligence, and operatic performances on horseback, all presented on a 360-degree stage.

But the Aguilar brand extends far beyond live performances. Angela has built a business empire of her own, selling her own perfume and even a branded doll. Meanwhile, Pepe is actively developing and pitching scripted television projects while managing his own music career. His latest album, Que Llueva Tequila, was recently released, and he has no intention of slowing down.

Building an Independent Music Empire

Pepe Aguilar’s business acumen has played a crucial role in his success. After a legal battle with his first record label in the early 2000s over ownership of his master recordings and publishing rights, he took control of his career as an independent artist. He launched his own labels, Machín Records and Equinoccio Records, to retain full ownership of his work. Recently, he signed a worldwide agreement with Virgin Music Group, Universal Music Group’s distribution division, which allows him to maintain complete control of his masters while expanding his reach globally.

In addition to his own music, Pepe is guiding the careers of his children, who are both signed to his labels. He has also taken accordionist Irany Divad under his wing. She was previously a member of Karol G’s band during the Mañana Será Bonito stadium tour and is now carving out a solo career with his support.

While the Aguilar family has always worked together and shared resources, Pepe is fully aware that things are changing as his children grow and forge their own paths in the industry. His latest 13-track album blends traditional mariachi with rock influences, showcasing a side of him that traces back to his early days in music. Meanwhile, his children are reaching new audiences, particularly in the U.S., through high-profile collaborations. One such project was Angela’s duet with Becky G, Por El Contrario, which helped solidify her presence in the pop-Latin market. Angela has also earned recognition from the Recording Academy—she was nominated for a Grammy in 2018 for her album Primero Soy Mexicana.

A Legacy That’s More Than Just Family

Navigating the music industry today is far more complex than when Pepe was starting out, and he acknowledges the challenges his children will face. “When it comes to the industry, there’s a lot we have to think about now that I didn’t necessarily have to deal with when I was first developing as an artist,” he explains. “My father and I had very different approaches to business, but he always made sure I understood the bigger picture: this isn’t just a family affair—it’s a business.”

As he continues to balance his career as a performer, producer, and businessman, Pepe is also focused on the future of his multimillion-dollar music catalog. Looking ahead, he remains deeply involved in industry discussions, including the evolving landscape of música mexicana and its representation at the 2024 Latin Grammy Awards.

With a rich legacy to uphold, a growing empire, and a new album out in the world, Pepe Aguilar is proving that the Aguilar name isn’t just a symbol of tradition—it’s a powerhouse in the entertainment industry.
