The Donots and another prominent band have canceled their performances at the 2025 Open R Festival in Uelzen. Fans speculate the decision is tied to the controversial inclusion of Rammstein frontman Till Lindemann in the festival lineup.
Donots Pull Out Without Explanation
The alternative rock band Donots, hailing from Ibbenbüren, announced their withdrawal from the Open R Festival via social media. “Quick update: The Open R Festival 2025 will happen without us,” the band wrote, offering no further explanation. However, fans quickly took to the comments, linking the decision to the organizer’s insistence on retaining Till Lindemann as a performer.
Till Lindemann’s Opening Act Sparks Backlash
Originally, Till Lindemann, known for hits like Steh auf, Knebel, and Platz Eins, was scheduled to kick off the festival with a solo concert on Saturday, June 21. The main festival events are set to follow from June 27 to 29. However, Lindemann’s inclusion faced significant backlash, including an online petition titled “No Stage for Abuse of Power.”
Allegations Against Lindemann
The criticism stems from serious allegations made against the 61-year-old musician in 2023. Several women claimed they were approached after Rammstein concerts to attend exclusive after-show parties where sexual encounters with Lindemann allegedly occurred. Some women reported being under the influence of alcohol or drugs during these events and described the situations as abuses of power. Lindemann has denied all allegations. In August 2023, the Berlin Public Prosecutor’s Office dropped its investigation due to insufficient evidence.
Festival Organizer Faces Pressure
Open R Festival organizer Ulrich Gustävel initially appeared unfazed by the protests. According to reports by Norddeutscher Rundfunk, Uelzen’s Equal Opportunity Officer expressed confusion over why Lindemann was booked in light of the allegations.
Solo Show Separated from Festival
Following growing criticism, Gustävel decided to separate Lindemann’s performance from the main festival. As reported by the Allgemeine Zeitung Uelzen, the concert will now be presented as an independent event ahead of the festival. It is slated to take place at the Albrecht Theater Grounds, the same location hosting the Almased Arena for the Open R Festival.
Other Artists Considered Dropping Out
Gustävel reportedly acted under pressure from another artist, who had threatened to withdraw if Lindemann’s concert remained part of the festival. The organizer did not disclose which artist made this threat.
However, the Donots announced their cancellation just days before their scheduled Friday performance. One fan commented on the band’s Facebook post, speculating, “I assume it’s because the festival is still sticking with Till Lindemann.” Similar sentiments echoed across Instagram.
Mixed Reactions from Fans
The Donots’ decision has received widespread support from their fans. Comments like “Good call” and “Thanks for standing your ground” were prominent on social media. Nonetheless, there were dissenting voices as well. Some criticized the move, arguing, “Other bands at the festival aren’t exactly saints, yet they’re celebrated.” Others pointed out that the allegations against Lindemann were never substantiated.
The controversy surrounding Lindemann and the Donots’ withdrawal continues to spark debate, leaving fans divided ahead of the much-anticipated Open R Festival.
