Mariah Carey Reclaims Holiday Throne and Smashes Chart Records

With the holiday season in full swing, the inevitable return of Mariah Carey’s “All I Want for Christmas Is You” has once again reshuffled the musical landscape. The track, widely considered a modern classic, has surged back to the top of the charts in German-speaking Europe, cementing its status as an unstoppable seasonal force. In Germany specifically, the song has broken a significant historical record, logging its 22nd cumulative week at number one.

A Historic Milestone in Germany

According to GfK Entertainment, which compiles the official rankings, Carey’s anthem has now spent more time at the summit of the German single charts than any other song in history. Just three weeks before Christmas, the track reclaimed the top spot to secure the record.

This achievement breaks a tie established last year when Carey shared the leaderboard with “Komet” by Udo Lindenberg and Apache 207, both of which sat at 21 weeks. Now, Carey stands alone in the lead. It has been a long road for the 31-year-old song; interestingly, it took a quarter of a century after its initial release before it finally reached the number-one position in Germany for the first time.

Dominance Across the Border

The holiday takeover is just as aggressive in neighboring Switzerland, where festive hits are effectively crowding out standard pop releases. Seven of the current top ten singles are dedicated to Christmas trees, winter snow, or the holiday spirit. The surge was strong enough to displace global superstar Taylor Swift, whose track “The Faith Of Ophelia” slid from first to third place this past Sunday.

In Switzerland, the December number-one spot has belonged almost exclusively to Carey for years. Her 1994 hit has now reigned supreme for a total of 23 weeks over the course of Swiss chart history. This is a feat unmatched by any other artist, regardless of genre or season.

The Eternal Runner-Up

While Carey enjoys her view from the top, other classics have had to settle for silver. Wham! and their enduring hit “Last Christmas” have cemented a reputation as the “eternal seconds.” Despite being a holiday staple since its release in 1984, the song has never managed to clinch the number-one spot in Switzerland. Instead, it has spent a cumulative 16 weeks stuck firmly at number two.

Rounding Out the Top Ten

The rest of the leaderboard reads like a curated holiday playlist. Brenda Lee holds the fourth position with “Rockin’ Around The Christmas Tree.” The dominance of seasonal music continues down the line, with Sia’s “Snowman,” Ariana Grande’s “Santa Tell Me,” Dean Martin’s “Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Let It Snow!,” and Bobby Helms’ “Jingle Bell Rock” occupying the sixth through ninth spots respectively.
