While iPhones are fantastic at recording video and audio, if you want to take things to the next level and get the best possible quality you can, you’re going to need to start thinking about upgrading the equipment you’re using.
Okay, so while your video may be okay thanks to the latest iPhones being capable of 4K video capture, the audio is not so great, especially if you’re recording in less than ideal conditions. With this in mind, today we’re going to be taking a look at the Zoom iQ6 microphone, a mic designed especially for your iOS device.
In a Rush?
• Plugs directly into your iOS device
• Ideal for all situations, including concerts, interviews, lectures, meetings and more
• Fully compatible with the Handy Recorder app
• Adjustable design and versatile positioning
• Integrated headphone socket for precision sound capturing
The Perfect iOS Mic?
First things first. We love the iQ6, even just thanks to its level of portability. We see so many vloggers and camera people out and about on the streets these days, yet so many of them are using large and obtrusive microphones that just seem awkward to use.
This just isn’t a problem with the iQ6. Despite being an extremely compact design, this mic still boasts a full range of features that you’re going to benefit from immensely. First up and most notably is the X/Y stereo input, and the fact these mics are unidirectional condensers.
As we mentioned above, this is ideal for all kinds of audio recording, no matter where you are or what you’re doing. In fact, these are the same microphones that are used in the H4n Handy Recorder, a world-renowned recorder that’s celebrated for its versatility and quality.
However, it’s worth noting another benefit that the microphones aren’t actually fixed. They can be angled anywhere between 90° and 120°, ensuring you can record a wide-angle stereo-quality audio file with precision detail. This is patented technology that you won’t be able to get with any other product.
A Line Out Feature
Perhaps one of the most surprising features is the headphone line out which is actually integrated into the body of the microphone itself. This is a very important feature because it allows you to not only test the quality of your audio using headphones but also can be used as a line out.
This means that in addition to being able to record your audio directly to your iPhone or iPad, you can actually connect it up with an Aux lead or headphone jack to jack straight into your computer. This is incredible because you can be using a primary quality microphone and upload that audio directly into your computer.
With this feature, the world is practically your oyster, and there are no limits to what you can achieve. This feature alone makes this one of our favorite microphones.
The Compatible Handy Recorder App
Since this mic plugs directly into your iOS device, it goes without saying that you’re going to need access to a dedicated app to make sure everything works properly, which is exactly what you have here.
The Zoom Handy Recorder app can be downloaded for free via the iTunes App Store and adds a whole new range of functionality to your iOS device, and your microphone. Firstly, you’ll be able to exclusively see level metering of your mic, directly on your iPhone in real-time.
This means you can accurately set your headphone level, or even set up an automatic recording setting that allows you to set when you want audio recorded without having to press anything. This is ideal in meeting settings when you want to save memory but only record relevant sound.
The app also gives you the ability to choose between the types of audio file you want to export and save your sound as. You can choose from a variety of leading professional audio sound file types, or something like AAC with is much friendly space-wise.
You can even add effects from within the app and control many of the post-production methods. These include compression rates, applying reverb effects, EQing your sounds, and much more. This isn’t even that far off of a full recording and production suite, all with the hardware included.
When you’re happy with your final sounds, you can share your final files via email, a file-sharing service, or even directly upload them to SoundCloud to share with the rest of the world.
A Complete User Experience
As you can already see, Zoom has gone above and beyond the call of duty when it comes to providing you with a full recording experience that contains everything you need to the highest quality.
Whether we’re referring to the app or the microphone itself, everything has been set up to be incredibly easy to use and doesn’t have much of a learning curve, even if you haven’t used something like this before.
This mic is affordable, high-performance, and comes with everything you can need to get started right away. This mic is easily better than any microphone you’d find built into something like DSLR camera, hands down.
In fact, having spent some time with this device, we really don’t think there are any downsides to it. Of course, if you’re looking to record the absolute best audio quality possible with real depth of sound, this isn’t going to be the mic you’re going to use.
However, if you’re looking for something powerful, accurate, clean and easy to use, that’s more than perfect for the majority of basic to advanced audio recording situations, this is the mic you’re going to want to have by yourself.
Taking one final look at the iQ6, it’s safe to say that we really can’t find anything wrong with this microphone. It’s small, it’s compact, it’s affordable, and it does everything you’re going to need it do; so happy recording!
